In Central Asia’s Fergana Valley, young Sardal is trapped between divorced parents. He longs to live with his father, but his mother refuses, and life with his violent stepfather becomes unbearable. After another beating, Sardal runs away, determined to reach his father. When his mother catches him, they finally speak honestly about the divorce and remember the family apple orchard that once bloomed twice a year. At his father’s house, Sardal faces a cruel truth. His father has a new family and a new son. Only an old dog recognizes him. Under the apple tree, Sardal must decide what “home” means.
